Archie - special case

Doberman-Rottweiler
2-3 years old
MALE

Archie has been at North Clwyd Animal Rescue for too long and much needs a home and an owner who can do him justice.

He is a very quiet and calm dog and only responds to calm confident handling. Initially he is wary of new people but once he recognises somebody as a calm assertive leader and trusts them he becomes a fantastic dog. His temperament is quite fragile which means he doesn't respond at all well to excited, nervous or forceful handling. But, by contrast, he does excel and will flourish in a calm consistant environment. He walks on a loose lead next to my side and responds very well when walking. Due to his trust in me and his calm nature I have used him as a calming influence on more boisterous dogs at the rescue centre by walking them together. During this time he has shown no aggression to other dogs and has displayed some good manners when interacting with other dogs but, as with people, is wary of dogs that are new to him and much prefers calm natured dogs.

He is an intelligent dog who sits, gives paw, fetches and has good recall in the paddock but he is capable of much more. I think he'd walk obedience classes and would make a great agility dog.

He finds kennel life at the rescue centre quite stressful mainly due to his daily exercise and stimulation needs rarely being met. He attempts to cope by continuously circling his kennel or by guarding his toys and treats.

Archie has suffered from a poor reputation in the past but I’m confident this can be put down to poor handlers before he was signed into the rescue centre and the stress he’s suffering whilst in kennels. I have worked with Archie for several months and am confident he would be a great dog with the correct handling and leadership.

Anybody thinking of adopting Archie must be prepared to meet his needs on a steady consistant routine in order to keep him happy and balanced. He’ll need a minimum of 1.5 hours on-lead walking throughout the day, every day. Also mental stimulation is important for such an intelligent dog, flyball, obedience, agility, whistle training, tracking and seeking, swimming and tricks are all good for mentally satisfying dogs.

I have started tracking scent trails with Archie and he has shown a great aptitude for this, and thoroughly enjoys it!

Archie also isn’t a dog that can be seen once then taken home, good introductions and a few long initial walks are needed to gain Archie’s trust so a relationship can then be built. I’m willing to work with anybody interested in Archie, before and after adoption, to ensure giving him the best chance of finding the home he needs and deserves
